Title: IS DDOS PROTECTION IMPORTANT WHEN SELECTING A WEBHOST?
Post by: Svetlana on Aug 11, 2022, 01:29 PM
When considering a hosting provider, the issue of DDOS protection often arises. I've observed that some hosts offer this protection while others don't, yet both receive positive reviews and high ratings. This brings up the question of whether DDOS protection is a crucial factor when selecting a host or if there are alternative protections against such attacks.

There are four protocols by which DDoS attacks can be classified, and protection against them typically involves a filter or screen barrier. While many hosts provide some form of DDoS protection, it is often limited to filtering out spammers and network layer attacks. If the price difference between hosts with and without DDoS protection is minimal, it is generally advisable to opt for the former, but in cases where the price difference is substantial, purchasing a package from a cloud service that provides filter or protection screen may be more cost-effective.

It's important to note that while DDoS protection is a vital security measure, it is not foolproof. It's still essential to maintain proactive security measures to prevent and mitigate attacks. This can include regular monitoring of network traffic, ensuring that all software and hardware are up-to-date with the latest security patches, and implementing strong passwords and multi-factor authentication. By taking a multi-layered approach to security, including both DDoS protection and other measures, businesses can help ensure the safety and integrity of their online assets.

The bottom line is that even providers that offer you protection against DDoS attacks usually do not provide it in full. That is, the provider takes some measures that will make it difficult for attackers to attack, but for reliable protection, you should use third-party services like StormWall, which filter traffic on the way to your server. 8)

As a rule, most hosters provide protection against such attacks, but at a very basic level.
If you are not expecting DDoS from a snot-nosed schoolboy, but from the serious guys, you should take care of such protection yourself. There are a lot of solutions - it's a very long talk.
At some average level, even the famous Cloudflare will help. Even on a free plan.

If you are not afraid that competitors will seek to arrange for you as much downtime as possible, then you should not worry, but if you provide services, it is better to sleep peacefully when there is protection, since unscrupulous competitors will be able to harm you. If from the technical side, then in the case of ddos protection - at the time of ddos itself, the site will continue to work, and parasitic traffic will be filtered, and in the absence of protection - at the time of DDOS, your IP address will be blocked when traffic drops to the usual level-it will be unblocked again.

Get hosting with DDOS protection, it will be more reliable. Your site will not be subject to various attacks. Pay attention to it s layer according to the OSI type: it is better not to be lower than L3-L4.

The DDoS prevention system of hosting providers should ideally be arranged with their own infrastructure with filtering equipment available and functioning along side with licenses for software;

ZOMRO.com
Its servers are located in the Netherlands. For web hosting on a virtual server with a dedicated volume of 100 GB, the company charges 2.18 euros per month.
The contract is concluded for a year. But this space is not enough for me. If you want 400 GB of disk space, you will have to pay 6.84 euros. A full-fledged server costs 44 euros/month.
Protection against DDoS attacks is serious. There are filters:

● DNS amplification;

● DNS flood;

● ICMP flood;

● HTTP flood;

● SYN flood.

Everything is fine, but the price tag is too high. You need to pay extra for traffic.

The crucial importance of effective DDoS protection for hosting provider servers cannot be overstated, as it directly impacts a website's stability and availability. The objective of a DDoS attack is to overwhelm the servers or their bandwidth, causing the site to become unresponsive and driving visitors to competing sites.

It is vital that hosting providers programatically separate virtual servers on a physical server to prevent a single attack from disrupting the operation of other sites. When selecting a hosting provider, it's also essential to consider their protection features, vulnerability, popularity, and the speed of their technical support response.

In addition to these considerations, it's also worth investing in regular backups and disaster recovery plans to minimize the damage caused by DDoS attacks or other unexpected events. By taking a holistic approach to website security and resilience, businesses can help ensure continuity of operations and maintain customer trust even in the face of disruptive attacks.

To take or not to take a hosting with DDoS protection depends on your knowledge in this area. From my own experience, I'll say that it's better to take hosting with at least some protection (often these are ordinary firewalls), but remember that most hosting providers inflate the price of hosting with such an addition. No one bothers you to purchase DDOS - protection separately from the hosting and impose it on top of the hosting. Of course, there are problems with installation - when you share hosting with someone else, but there are no unsolvable issues.

If you create a blog or a small site, then at first (somewhere up to 1000 hits per day) protection against DDOS attacks is not needed (tested in practice). As the audience expands, I would advise you to install at least a mirror or a firewall. If you are now thinking about whether to take hosting with DDoS protection right away, then this is a moot point - often this item increases the amount of the monthly rent at times, so I recommend renting hosting without DDoS protection, and then purchase separate protection. All of the above only work if you have control over your hosting and are not renting shared hosting.

What exactly is DDOS? Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) attacks are when multiple systems, often compromised, flood a server with a massive amount of traffic. The goal is to overwhelm the server, making it unable to respond to legitimate requests, effectively bringing your website or service offline. It's like trying to walk through a doorway when a thousand people are trying to push their way in at the same time—nobody gets through.

Now, onto the crux of your question: is DDOS protection essential when selecting a hosting provider? The short answer is: it depends on what you're hosting and who might be interested in taking it down.

For high-profile sites or those dealing with sensitive information—like e-commerce, banking, or popular blogs—DDOS protection is quite important. If your site goes down, you not only lose visitors but potentially revenue and reputation as well. For these kinds of sites, not having DDOS protection is like leaving your front door unlocked in a bad neighborhood.

However, if you're hosting a smaller, low-traffic site, or something like a personal blog, the risk of being targeted by a DDOS attack is significantly lower. Many hosts in this space don't offer DDOS protection because the chances of such an attack are minimal, and even if it happens, the impact might not be catastrophic. In these cases, positive reviews might stem from good performance, reliability, and customer service, which are equally critical factors in hosting.

That said, there are alternative ways to mitigate the impact of a DDOS attack without built-in host protection. For instance, content delivery networks (CDNs) like Cloudflare can absorb a lot of traffic and shield your origin server from getting overwhelmed. Another option is to use rate limiting or IP blacklisting, though these methods can be less effective against large-scale attacks.

In addition, there are some hosting providers that don't offer specific DDOS protection but still have robust infrastructures that can handle a reasonable amount of traffic spikes. These might not be true DDOS defenses, but they can still give you some level of resiliency against smaller attacks.

So, to sum it up: if you're running a mission-critical site, then yes, DDOS protection is a crucial factor, and you should look for a host that provides it. But if you're running a smaller site with less risk, other factors like uptime, support, and general performance might weigh more heavily in your decision. It's also worth considering a hybrid approach—using a host with good performance and adding external DDOS mitigation through a service like Cloudflare.
It's all about understanding the specific needs and risks associated with your site. Not every website needs fortress-level security, but for those that do, skipping on DDOS protection could be a costly mistake.

Yes, DDoS protection is crucial when selecting a web host. It ensures your website remains accessible during attacks, preventing downtime, loss of revenue, and damage to your reputation. DDoS protection also safeguards sensitive data and maintains user trust by keeping your site secure and functional under potential threats.
