According to the semi-annual report of the local registry, the number of registrations for .cn domains based in China decreased in the first half of last year.

However, during this time, new gTLDs increased significantly to compensate for the decline. The report indicated that there was a drop in the number of Chinese-registered .com names as well.

The English translation of CNNIC's statistical report for the first half of 2022 shows that there was a significant decrease in .cn registrations by registrants based in China from 20,410,139 at the end of 2021 to 17,861,269 at the end of June that year. Meanwhile, Verisign's Domain Name Industry Brief for Q2 2022 indicates .cn at 20.6 million.

New gTLDs, on the other hand, experienced a rise of nearly one million names in China from 3,615,751 domains to 4,590,705 over the same period. The CNNIC report also stated that new gTLDs comprised 13.6% of all domains registered in China.

The high adoption rate of new gTLDs in China has the potential to propel the country to a leadership position among new domains. It is essential to recognize, however, that the remarkable numbers for Chinese domains include registrations made during priority and premium stages, as well as those that agree with a particular deal for usage by the government of the People's Republic of China.
