ISP Manager, is there an alternative?

Hey there everyone!

So, I recently got myself a VDS and now I'm faced with the decision of choosing a control panel to install. The obvious choice that comes to mind is ISPmanager. However, from what I gather, the lite version comes with a $10 monthly price tag and only offers a 2-week trial period.

Now, here's where I could use some suggestions. Is there perhaps an alternative control panel that meets the following criteria:

- It's either free or cheaper than $400 per month.
- It allows me to create FTP users.
- It provides a convenient dashboard for creating and managing MySQL databases (preferably with phpMyAdmin).
- It allows me to create domains and subdomains.

Any ideas? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this topic as well!

Looking for a free alternative? Well, you might want to check out Webmin. It offers a range of features and functionalities, including an extension called Virtualmin, which specifically helps with managing virtual hosts in case you're into hosting organization.

However, it's worth noting that if you already have a well-configured and functioning system, there could be potential challenges in coordinating the configurations. So, keep that in mind while exploring your options.

Not exactly.

ISPmanager stands out because it minimally interferes with the system and comes with optimized configurations, settings, and software that align with the intentions of the distribution creators.

On the other hand, Plesk has a reputation for scattering software all over the place, making it difficult to troubleshoot when something goes wrong (occasionally resulting in issues like scattered sites with unclear solutions). In this regard, ISPmanager is more straightforward, even if the control panel goes haywire - you'll still have a well-configured system in some state and can definitely lift up the sites.

As for free panels, there's Vesta, but let's be honest, it feels like it was designed by aliens - it's easier to decipher secret code names than to navigate this panel.

When it comes to free control panels, brinycp takes the lead with its abundant functionality for enhancing security. On the other hand, fastpanel is a decent panel but falls short compared to brinycp.

Meanwhile, vestacp doesn't seem too bad of an option, although it has been noted to have several vulnerabilities.

However, none of these panels offer Revisium WAF integration, which is a significant advantage of ISPmanager.

Keep in mind that regardless of the panel you choose, it's crucial to configure them for maximum security. This includes limiting external access, implementing additional authorization measures for panels, phpMyAdmin, and webmail, disabling potentially risky PHP functions, configuring ModSecurity, and employing server security features like SELinux and AppArmor. Conducting regular security audits is also essential to maintain server security.

The Lite version of ispmanager is available at an official price of 62 euros per year, as indicated on their website: https://www.ispmanager.com/price.

In my opinion, seeking a free control panel may not be the most sensible choice. When opting for a free option, you may compromise on certain crucial aspects such as sufficient security measures, regular updates, and access to free official technical support that operates around the clock (24x7).

Furthermore, ispmanager frequently introduces impressive new features. For instance, they recently added support for docker management and mail migration, which demonstrates their commitment to improving functionality and keeping up with industry trends.

There are several options you might find really helpful. Let's explore a few alternatives to ISPmanager that match your criteria.

First of all, you might want to consider Webmin. It's completely free and allows you to manage system settings, including FTP users and MySQL databases with ease. It has a bit of a learning curve, but it's very powerful once you get the hang of it. You can manage your domains and subdomains through its interface, but keep in mind that it doesn't have built-in phpMyAdmin. However, you can always install phpMyAdmin separately and connect it with Webmin.

Another option is Ajenti. This is also open source and free to use. Ajenti has a clean and modern dashboard, and you can easily create and manage FTP users, MySQL databases, and domains. It does come with some plugins that enhance its functionality, including a phpMyAdmin integration option. The installation process is quite straightforward, so it could be a good fit for you.

If you're looking for something a bit more user-friendly, you could try Froxlor. It's another free control panel that provides a nice interface for managing FTP, MySQL databases, and domain settings. It's designed specifically for shared hosting environments, so it prioritizes user management and offers a good balance between ease of use and functionality.

Consider VestaCP. It's free and while it may not have all the bells and whistles of a paid solution, it does allow you to manage FTP users, set up MySQL databases, and create domains and subdomains. The interface is quite intuitive, which makes it easier for newcomers to navigate. VestaCP also integrates phpMyAdmin, so you won't have trouble managing your databases there.

All these options are viable alternatives to ISPmanager and will help you manage your VDS without incurring high monthly fees. Each has its unique strengths, so I would suggest trying them out to see which interface you prefer and which one suits your workflow the best.
